The objective of the D.O.T.S project is to create an interactive process in which a surgeon will use a Microscribe G2X (visualization tool) via a custom-developed graphical interface to assist in accurately reconstructing the bones in the face and skull. The Microscribe will provide the surgeon with quantitative points on the skull before and during bone fixation. By incorporating these data into a computational module for visualization and analysis, the surgeon will have a map to follow while restoring symmetry to the facial structure. The map will be a computerized three dimensional image of the patient’s skull and fractured bone that can be used to assess symmetry both qualitatively and quantitatively. The fully-implemented system will reduce the chance of misplaced bones and minimize the surgeries required to accurately reconstruct the skull.
